- Toyota is pulling back the hood on the new generation C-HR, ushering in a new era for small crossovers in Europe.
- It features three hybrid powertrain options including a new plug-in-hybrid option.
- Unfortunately for American C-HR fans, the new version won’t be coming stateside, as Toyota is shutting down the C-HR in the US after the 2022 model year.
The Toyota C-HR subcompact crossover is entering a new generation, and it’s been redesigned from tip to tail. The new car looks like a dead ringer for Toyota’s Prologue concept from December. The production vehicle sports 20-inch wheels and taillights that look more reasonable than the concept, but many playful styling options—like the available two-tone pain—remain. Unfortunately for US buyers, the C-HR was discontinued for America after the 2022 model year, and this new one is only intended for Europe.
The new C-HR will come with three powertrain options, and all will be hybrids. A front-wheel-drive-only hybrid with a 1.8-liter gas engine will be at the bottom of the lineup, with a more powerful 2.0-liter hybrid setup offering either front- or all-wheel drive. A new plug-in-hybrid configuration, also with a 2.0-liter gas engine, sits at the top. This powerplant appears to be lifted directly from the Prius, which should imbue the new C-HR with quite a bit more power than before, especially the 2.0-liter option. For reference, the standard 2.0-liter setup of the US-spec Prius hybrid produces 194 horsepower and the Prius Prime plug-in-hybrid has 220 hp. We expect the C-HR PHEV’s electric-only range to be similar to the Prius Prime as well, which is rated at 39 miles.
The interior of the new generation is the same as the exterior. A new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster sits behind the steering wheel. An 8.0- or 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen sits next to the gauge cluster. The new infotainment system adds a virtual assistant and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, the new system can provide EV network information and local charging locations.
Toyota will introduce the new car with a set of special edition models, headlined by the GR Sport edition. GR adds a G-mesh pattern to the grille, 20-inch alloy wheels, with GR badges on the exterior and embossed on the headrests.
