“Burning money” is supposed to just be an expression, but this YouTuber ended up doing just that after taking his Ferrari for an ill-advised hoon through a field.
WhistlinDiesel was hurtling his Ferrari F8 through a harvested corn field, with a rented Chrysler Pacifica people mover serving as the camera car, when a member of his entourage noticed flames coming from the rear of the sports car.
They quickly pulled to a stop, but despite one of the group members imploring the others to keep the fire off the field “no matter what”, the flames quickly spread.
Evidently, neither car had a fire extinguisher on board. One of the film crew searched for water in the Pacifica before it caught on fire, but found only Gatorade and Red Bull.
As they fumbled to put out the Ferrari fire with energy drinks, the flames quickly shot across to the Chrysler.
“I don’t care about the cars, just keep it from spreading onto the field, ok?” said 25-year old WhistlinDiesel, real name Cody Detwiler.
“We ****ed up,” he says later, standing in front of the flaming vehicles. “There goes half a million dollars. I guess, don’t drive in corn fields.”
His videographer records him in front of the vehicles as the flames engulf them and the tyres pop from the heat.
This isn’t the first time the YouTuber has experienced an engine fire driving through a corn field, though clearly he didn’t learn his lesson.
He said he paid US$400,000 (A$624,366) for the F8, while the rented minivan costs circa US$40,000 (A$62,436). There was also equipment the group couldn’t get out of the latter in time.
“Do I even have insurance on this car? I think if I do it’s the most minimal… I don’t have full coverage on anything, they won’t give it to me, they’re like ‘He’s going to cause an accident and burn a car down’,” said Detwiler.
“Yeah, that’s what happened – the insurance companies were right,” another group member says.
He picks through the wreckage later, finding the carbon-ceramic brakes and titanium exhaust look almost untouched. The F8’s badging is also found among the ashes.
Everything else is destroyed, however, with the Ferrari a melted wreck in a scorched field.
Despite the huge financial loss, he appears to remain in good spirits, and the video ends with him gazing wistfully at a Ferrari showroom. Let’s hope he doesn’t take the next one to a corn field.
