Local delivery for Cupra’s The first electric vehicle does not start until April, but the Spanish brand has already confirmed another 200 examples is going down below.

Cupra said it had sold almost all of its initial allocation of 400 born hatchback and 200 more are now available for pre-order.

The company says this will ship “later in 2023”.

Cupra has 35 examples of initial Born allocations without buyers. The company has also touted fast delivery times for its Ateca and Formentor crossovers, indicating it has a strong supply.

“Initially it was Cupra’s intention to limit pre-shipment orders to 400, but that’s the response received by 200 more Anak Lahir. [been] allocated to Australia in the short term,” said Cupra’s head of product and planning, Jeff Shafer.

“We will not at this stage estimate the sales volume of Born 2023, but there is no doubt that this early response bodes well.”

The company originally said it would freeze orders until it began shipping the Born.

In addition to launching the electric Born range, Cupra has already sold plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its Leon hatchback and Formentor crossover, with the first allocation sold.

Cupra recently dropped the price of the Leon VZe PHEV – as well as the petrol VZx – to bring it in line with the Born.

As a small electric hatchback, the Born currently doesn’t have much direct competition.

Bookings have opened for the more affordable GWM Ora, while there’s the quieter Nissan Leaf and the less practical Mini Electric.

MG also introduced the MG 4 earlier this year, an electric hatchback that has been developed with the European market in mind.
