Overview After running alone from 2004 to 2013, Maybach returns for 2016 as Mercedes-Benz’s premier luxury sub-brand, offering a truly luxurious variant of the S-class sedan. Just as Mercedes-AMG represents the automaker’s performance portfolio, Mercedes-Maybach focuses on direct comfort. The Maybach S560 and S650 are both 7.9 inches longer than the standard S-class, with every bit of that extension reserved for the rear seats. The roofline is also adjusted to offer extra privacy for those in the uber-cradle. All these changes coalesce in a conservative flagship that has no live theater Rolls-Royce or Bentley, better for bankers and diplomats than…
China is the country with the largest new car market and the highest car production. You’d think we’d know the Chinese automotive brand as well as we know Detroit, but since the model hasn’t been exported to the US (yet), readers might find their names unfamiliar. Of China’s nine largest multi-brand automakers, together fielding nearly 50 nameplates, only four have mapped out a global strategy so far. And of those four, it can be said that only Geely, BYD, and Nio, at this point, are advanced enough to surpass the American, Korean, and European brands. Hot on the heels of…
Kia Australia may make progress with headquarters to get larger EV6 allocation in 2023, but smaller and more affordable Niro EV will remain a low volume offering in Australia for now. Chief operating officer Damien Meredith confirmed the local arm of the brand could deliver just 50 units of the EV Niro a month “if there is demand”. The general manager of product planning, Roland Rivero, later said the Niro’s tight supply is not so different from the challenging situation for the electric Sorento variant. “Each model line has its own obstacles. While we are fortunate to have more stock…
Overview McLaren is introducing a new mid-engine sportster for the 2024 model year that is expected to be called the 750S. As the name suggests, it has been designed and engineered as a midpoint between the older 720S it replaces and the more extreme 765LT. It’s not an entirely new vehicle and will likely carry some reworked components from the 720S, including its twin-turbo V-8. The British marque has reportedly increased the powertrain output by 30 horsepower, which means it should have a 740 horsepower rating. While no McLaren is subtle, we’d expect the exterior styling to be slightly more…

Overview After BMW bought Rolls-Royce and the Volkswagen Group bought Bentley, Mercedes-Benz traveled back to the 1930s and revived the Maybach name to take on a pair of British luxury icons. Despite the Maybach’s strong blend of bespoke luxury and cutting-edge technology, Mercedes killed its standalone brand after the 2013 model year. Just three years later, the brand was reborn as the ultimate expression of the established S-class prestige. Mercedes-Maybach is now a sub-brand of S-class models in the same way that Mercedes-AMG functions as a sporty performance division. The Maybach S-class runs on the long-wheelbase version of the S-class…
Volvo is working on six new EVs to be revealed over the next four years, according to a report from Reuters.Along with electric replacements for the brand’s SUVs and sedans, Volvo is said to be designing an electric minivan based on the Zeekr 009 (shown above), leveraging its status as part of the Geely Group.Volvo’s minivan will reportedly feature a more “emotional” design, but it likely won’t be sold in the US, instead being aimed at the Asian market where luxury vans are popular.Volvo unveiled its first purpose-built EV, a three-row SUV called the EX90, late last year.
