The Mercedes-Benz GLE-class and AMG GLE lineups are gearing up for a mid-cycle update, with significant revisions to the powertrain and a new hybrid player in the lineup. Mercedes also updated the interior and exterior styling, adding standard features and options for the AMG GLE version.
The entire lineup is now electric, with most models getting a 48-volt hybrid system and an integrated starter generator. Peak output remains unchanged, with the V-8 AMG GLE63 S producing the highest output at 603 hp, and the four-cylinder GLE350 making the least, at 255. The standard GLE class sees the addition of the plug-in hybrid GLE400e 4Matic model, which adds a synchronous motor 134- permanently excited hp to work together with the standard turbo-four gas engine to produce a combined 381 horsepower. The GLE400e 4Matic is available with a standard 11 kW AC onboard charger as well as an optional 60 kW DC charger.
Visual changes are kept to a minimum for the new model. Chrome inserts have been added in several places up front to try and improve road presence, while both the headlights and taillights have been restyled. The front fascia on the GLE53 is redesigned with “expressively shaped” side air intakes in a jet wing-inspired design, according to the manufacturer. The AMG badge is displayed in place of the standard Mercedes-Benz logo that normally adorns the hood. Paint options are expanded to include Twilight Blue Metallic and Alpine Gray Manufacturing, with the AMG lineup also adding new upholstery options.
Updated standard features for the AMG lineup. AMG Performance exhaust system, MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, memory package, parking assistance package, heated and ventilated front seats, and AMG Performance Steering are all new standard for 2024.
In an attempt to lean on the GLE’s off-road capabilities, the GLE580 gets a new off-road package. The package includes protection for the SUV’s underside, and adds 1.2 inches of ground clearance over the standard model. A new “Off-Road” mode was added to the interface, giving access to a virtual view under the front of the vehicle, including the front wheel and steering wheel position. New trailer technology has also been added, allowing drivers to enter and save trailer dimensions to the system. The new trailer assist controls steering angle and speed to help drivers back up to 90 degrees with a trailer attached.
