Overview
It’s fuel efficient, stylish and fun to drive, all features that make the 2024 Honda Civic a winner in our book. The Civic is a quintessential small car, and probably what most people think of when they think of economical and practical everyday transport, even more so than rivals such as Hyundai Elantra and also Mazda3. The entry-level model comes with a 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder but a more powerful 180-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and hybrid powertrain are also available. Touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard across the lineup, and Honda also equips every Civic with an extensive list of driver assistance features. It may not have the features of the performance-oriented Civic Si and Civic Type R, but the standard Civic still gives the driver a good feel, with sharp handling and refined road manners.
What’s New for 2024?
A hybrid powertrain is set to join the Civic lineup for 2024. Honda says the Civic hybrid will be offered as a sedan and as a hatchback, both powered by versions of the hybrid powertrain found in the Accord hybrid. That means a four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors for somewhere between 180 and 200 horsepower.
Price and Which One to Buy
Our recommendation is the well-equipped EX sedan, which comes with plenty of extra features that easily justify the price hike. Those goodies include blind spot monitoring, a power sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated outside mirrors and heated front seats. It also comes standard with a more powerful 180 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. If you’re buying a hatchback, we’d steer you to the EX-L, which offers similar equipment and adds leather upholstery.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
Although the Civic has been redesigned for 2022, the powertrain options are carried over from the previous generation car. The base model comes standard with a 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the engine upgrades continue to a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that now produces 180 horsepower. The new Civic is offered exclusively as a front-wheel drive car. Unfortunately, the manual transmission offered on the previous-generation Civic sedan has been cut for 2022, leaving the CVT as the sole offering. A six-speed manual is still available on hatchback models, though. On our test track, our turbocharged Touring sedan required 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is slower than the last generation Civic results. Manual The Sport Touring hatchback we tested does slightly better at 7.3 seconds to 60 mph. Fortunately, the nimble handling, communicative ride and balanced ride that we appreciated so much in the last generation model are present and accounted for here. The sporty one and seriously do sports High-performance Type-R variants are again part of a family and are reviewed separately.
Real World Fuel Economy and MPG
According to the EPA, the most fuel-efficient version of the new Civic is the mid-range EX, which earns ratings of 33 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. Fuel economy estimates for the hybrid model are not yet available. On us 75-mph highway fuel economy range, the 2022 Civic Sport Hatchback delivers 36 mpg. For more information on the Civic’s fuel economy, visit the website EPA website.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
The streamlined interior design exudes clean lines and the dashboard features full-width honeycomb patterned mesh design elements that cleverly hide the air vents. The wide center console looks less cluttered than the outgoing model and features a large, deep bin in front of the shift lever to store smartphones, keys and road trip snacks. Honda says passenger space is about the same, and cargo space is more spacious.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Civic comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display, but a larger 9.0-inch unit is optional, as is a 10.2-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and offer wireless connectivity when paired with the larger screen. Other options include in-dash navigation, a Bose stereo system and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
Majority driver assistance features will be offered as standard, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assist. For more information on Civic crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) website. Key safety features include:
- Standard automatic emergency brake
- Standard lane departure warning with lane keeping assist
- Standard adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Honda’s standard warranty package is modest, with rivals like the Elantra and Kia Forte offers more comprehensive coverage. Civic buyers will get a free scheduled maintenance plan, though, something the Toyota Corolla also offers as standard.
- The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Free scheduled maintenance covered for two years or 24,000 miles
