Overview
Big two-door grand tourers are a rarity in today’s automotive world, making the 2024 BMW 8-series coupe and convertible all the more valuable. Each brings a very elegant look along with a balanced driving attitude. While not as fast as the automaker’s M8 model (reviewed separately), the 8-series still offers plenty of power with either a standard turbocharged inline-six or an optional twin-turbo V-8 under the hood. Inside, both models pamper occupants with plush materials, comfortable seats and plenty of room to stretch out—at least in the front seats; the rear will be comfortable for anyone of above average height. But there’s more room in the back of the 8-series than its two main rivals—the Mercedes-AMG SL-class and the Lexus LC—both of which offer barely-there seats. Also, if you really need a full-size cabin, BMW offers a mechanically similar 8-series Gran Coupe with four doors and more room inside.
What’s New for 2024?
Nothing: The 8-series coupe and convertible both carry over to 2024 without any significant updates.
Price and Which One to Buy
We prefer the incredible power of the all-wheel-drive only M850i, with its 523-hp twin-turbo V-8. We also love the droptop version’s grand and more immersive drama, though it comes with a nearly $10K surcharge. The 8’s cabin is luxuriously furnished, with attractive accents and leather covering nearly every surface, and it can be mixed and matched to suit each owner’s preferred aesthetic. We especially love the combination of Cognac Merino leather and Aluminum Dark Trace interior trim. Among the options we’d pick are glass controls for a more luxurious interior, and neck warmers in the front seat headrests to allow us to enjoy longer top-down driving periods in our four-seasons.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
BMW’s biggest coupes and convertibles start with a 335 hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder. The 840i model is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either rear or all-wheel drive (called xDrive in BMW parlance). While we haven’t driven the 8 with the six-cylinder yet, BMW has built a reputation on a smooth and responsive powertrain, so only speed freaks are likely to be disappointed. Instead, we’ve driven both M850i body styles that feature a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8, an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. This combination delivers impressive acceleration for a Bimmer of its size and provides a rich soundtrack in the sportiest of environments. Likewise, the transmission shifts from relaxed to reactive based on the driver’s right foot. Most importantly, the 8-series lives up to its grand tourer promise with a surprisingly quiet ride and surprising sportiness. Its steering feedback is direct and linear but filters out road imperfections and front tire feedback. Although its adaptive dampers allow additional flexibility depending on the selected drive mode, in the stiffest setting they make the 8 very stable during cornering. The car’s powerful braking system and firm pedal feel add to the feeling of absolute confidence.
Real World Fuel Economy and MPG
The more powerful M850i, which includes a twin-turbo V-8 and standard all-wheel drive, means a significant reduction in EPA fuel economy ratings compared to the turbo six-cylinder that powers the 840i model. The M850i is rated at up to 17 mpg city and 25 highway, while the less powerful 840i is rated at up to 23 mpg city and 30 highway. We tested the M850i coupe and convertible our 75-mph fuel economy route, where they achieved 29 and 26 mpg, respectively. While both body styles exceed their EPA ratings, the coupe does so by 4 mpg while the softtop only manages 1 mpg more. Interior, Comfort and Cargo
The interior of the 2024 8-series offers all the infotainment gadgets and luxury features expected in a high-priced grand tourer. Every model has heated 14-way power-adjustable front seats, soft-close automatic doors and customizable ambient lighting; more luxurious upgrades include glass controls and additional luxury materials. It can also be equipped with unique BMW Individual options, such as a luxurious white-brown color scheme. Although the BMW offers a pair of vestigial rear seats, it’s not a pleasant place for adults to spend time. The 8’s low roofline also hampers headroom in the front seats and outward visibility isn’t great, but that’s the price of fashion. Its interior cubby storage consists of a closeable tray in front of the center console, a useful center bin and ample door pockets. We also managed to fit five handbags in the coupe’s trunk and six more with the rear seats stowed, but the convertible held one less bag in each scenario.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen are standard on every 8 Series. Unfortunately, the instrument panel is too crowded and not very intuitive to operate with steering wheel controls. The infotainment system has multiple ways to interact with it, including a handy rotary knob on the center console. It also features standard Apple CarPlay capability, wireless charging, and Wi-Fi hotspot—Android Auto is missing. Those who want a more detailed sound system can opt for the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround system.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
The 2024 8 Series offers a lot driver assistance technology, including a semi-autonomous driving mode. For more information on 8-series crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) website. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
- Adaptive cruise control is available with stop-and-go technology
- Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist are available
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
BMW covers every 8 series with a competitive limited warranty. However, it insinuates an edge with its Lexus rival. While the LC has an additional two years or 20,000 miles of powertrain coverage, the 8 line includes an additional two years or 26,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
- The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- Free maintenance covered for three years or 36,000 miles
