Overview
While the 2023 Lexus NX isn’t just a well-dressed Toyota RAV4—the vehicle it’s based on—it doesn’t meet the same standards as the European crossovers it competes with. Don’t get us wrong, its classy design and well-equipped cabin look and feel the part of a luxury SUV. To give the NX its widest appeal, Lexus offers it with no less than four different powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid that produces 302 horsepower. The problem is that nothing is as fun to drive as the competition Audi Q3, BMW X1, or the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class—and for us, the exhilarating driving experience carries more weight than practicality or fuel efficiency. For others, the NX will undoubtedly serve dutifully on daily commutes, weekend errands and road trips.
What’s New for 2023?
Since it was just redesigned last year, the NX rolls into 2023 with no changes to its packaging, content or mechanical bits.
Price and Which One to Buy
The NX starts under $40,000, but the base model may be too basic for some luxury buyers. Opting for the mid-range NX350 brings a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder 275 hp, which offers more appropriate performance. We’d suggest adding the Luxury package, which includes premium equipment such as a larger 14.0-inch infotainment display, quilted leather upholstery, cloud-connected navigation, upgraded interior ambient lighting, 20-inch wheels, four-way adjustable lumbar support for the driver, and lights adaptive front. For buyers looking for a more menacing look and more performance upgrades, the NX350 F Sport is similarly priced and also available with a Luxury package.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The 2023 NX has four powertrain options. The base model NX250 comes with a 203-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder while the NX350 is powered by a 275-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter; both come with an eight-speed automatic, but while the NX250 can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive, the NX350 has all-wheel drive standard. Two different hybrid options are on the menu, starting with the NX350h, which pairs two electric motors with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder for 239 horsepower. A more interesting option is the NX450h+, which borrows the 302-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain from the RAV4 Prime. In our tests, which The NX450h+ is the best in the range hits 60 mph in 5.6 seconds while The NX350h needs 7.6 seconds to achieve the same performance. Both hybrids come standard with all-wheel drive. Our first test drive is with the mid-range NX350 that launches a relatively quick 6.6-second zero-to-60-mph run. While it didn’t wow us with its handling prowess, we found the NX’s ride to be compliant, and with enough prodding, we were able to generate a few smiles in the rear. The F Sport trim comes with an adaptive suspension system that firms up the ride and provides some composure, but even so, the NX isn’t on par with the BMW X1 when it comes to attacking twisty roads.
Real World Fuel Economy and MPG
According to the EPA, the most fuel-efficient NX model is the hybrid NX350h, which earns a rating of 41 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. The entry-level NX250 is rated as high as 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway and the top-rated turbocharged NX350 is 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The NX450h+ plug-in hybrid is rated for 38 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, and the EPA estimates its battery pack holds enough electrons to provide up to 37 miles of electric-only driving range before needing a recharge. life our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, the all-wheel drive NX350 delivers 28 mpg but the hybrid NX350h returns just 34 mpg. Interior, Comfort and Cargo
Cabin design takes a big leap forward in this generation of NX, with a modern look and classy materials. The NX offers one of the more spacious cabins in the luxury subcompact crossover segment, with less rear-seat passenger room and more cargo space with the rear seats folded down than many of its competitors. Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, an ambient interior lighting system with 64 different color options, and black open-pore wood trim.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All NX models are equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system; the base model comes with a 9.8-inch display while the high-end trim gets a large 14.0-inch unit. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and work over a wireless connection; A wireless smartphone charging pad is optional as is a head-up display. A 10-speaker stereo system is standard and comes with a free trial of Amazon Music; a 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo system is optional on models equipped with the Premium or Luxury packages.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
Lexus offers a variety of standard driver assistance features in the NX. Buyers can expect to find automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control on all models. For more information on NX crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) website. Key safety features include:
- Standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Standard lane departure warning with lane keeping assist
- Standard adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Lexus has one of the more comprehensive protection packages in the industry. But in the meantime Volvo XC40 and the BMW X1 comes with three years of free scheduled maintenance, Lexus provides that benefit for just one.
- The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers six years or 70,000 miles
- Hybrid component warranty covers 8 years or 100,000 miles
- Free maintenance covered for one year or 10,000 miles
