Overview
If you’re after a badass ride that offers extreme levels of off-road performance, you have a few options. The big one is the Ford Bronco Raptor, an off-road predator that beefs up the already capable Bronco SUV with a beefy EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6, a multi-configurable four-wheel drive system, a suspension setup with Fox dampers that can tackle any terrain possible you throw in, big 37-inch tires with deep treads and skid plates galore. In addition, the Raptorized Bronco is also able to tow up to 4500 pounds and accelerate to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds. It’s not the most comfortable highway explorer but it’s not meant to be; This Ford is for die-hard off-road enthusiasts who see the world as a big, sandy, rock-strewn playground waiting to be explored.
What’s New for 2023?
The Bronco Raptor continues mostly unchanged for the 2023 model year except for a new Azure Gray Metallic Tri-Coat exterior color option and a revised stereo option for customers who don’t need a 10-speaker B&O system.
Price and Which One to Buy
The Bronco Raptor is offered exclusively in a four-door body style and a single trim level. Standard equipment includes a beefy EcoBoost V6 powerplant, a stout drivetrain consisting of a 10-speed automatic and 4.7 axle ratio, and all the off-road goodies needed to endow this flared machine with adept off-road prowess. A powerful B&O audio system is standard and uses 10 speakers including a sub-woofer. Buyers can choose to delete the subwoofer and downgrade to a system with reduced functionality or fewer speakers, which gives them a $100 to $665 credit depending on their choice. We’ll opt to keep the more premium sound system so we can enjoy the listening pleasure when we’re not tearing up sandbars or traversing muddy terrain. We will also stick with the standard marine grade vinyl covered seats, and the standard rubber floor, as it makes cleaning the cabin easier.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
Ford didn’t put a V-8 in the Bronco Raptor, but it manages to pack a 418-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 440 pound-feet of torque under the hood. The engine is paired exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission and an advanced four-wheel drive system that works together with a selectable GOAT (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) mode. The Bronco Raptor also has stronger suspension settings than the standard version to better handle power over dunes or jumps in the air, and it has a wider track set up for better high-speed stability. The Raptorized Bronco is equipped with Fox adaptive dampers from the F-150 Raptor as well as standard 37-inch BFGoodrich K02 all-terrain tires. It is rated to tow up to 4500 pounds as well. current our initial test drive, we were impressed by the Bronco Raptor’s off-road prowess when navigating bumpy terrain at speed and when crawling through rocky trails with the low-range gearing engaged. While the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 doesn’t have the same thrust as the 3.5-liter that powers the F-150 Raptor, it packs enough punch to reach 60 mph in 5.6 seconds at our test track.
Real World Fuel Economy and MPG
The Ford Bronco Raptor gets an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and only 16 mpg on the highway. That matches the F-150 Raptor’s estimated city mpg with 35-inch tires but is 2 mpg short of the big pickup’s highway rating. Compared to the 470-hp 6.4-liter V-8 Jeep Wrangler 392, the Bronco Raptor shows a marginal increase of 2 mpg in the city with a loss of 1 mpg on the highway. life our 75-mph highway fuel-saving route, the Bronco Raptor surprised us by returning 17 mpg—1 mpg more than expected, but still thirsty. Interior, Comfort and Cargo
While it showcases enhanced off-road prowess with a widened stance and massive flared fenders, the Bronco Raptor still shares the interior design and dimensions with the regular Bronco. That means it comes standard with rubber floors, marine-grade vinyl upholstery and a set of additional overhead toggles. Those who want a more luxurious cabin can opt for leather-trimmed seats. Like the regular Bronco, the Raptor also features removable body panels, specifically frameless doors that Ford claims are easy to open. Although it’s only available in a four-door configuration, the Raptor still enjoys all the innovative features found on other Bronco models, including exterior mirrors mounted on the windshield base that can still be used when the doors are removed. Likewise, there’s a shelf built into the top of its dashboard for smartphones and GoPros, which can be plugged into a nearby 12-volt outlet, to mount there.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Bronco Raptor features Ford’s latest Sync 4 interface, with a large 12.0-inch touchscreen mounted in the center of the dashboard. The infotainment system is equipped with contemporary features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Wi-Fi hotspot. The most desirable option also includes a powerful Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
The Bronco Raptor comes standard with Ford’s CoPilot 360 suite driver assistance technology, which includes basics like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist. Adaptive cruise control is optional.
